A late surge propelled the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity softball team to a 15-0 victory over host Salesian on Wednesday in a rematch of last year’s North Coast Section Division IV championship game.
The Lady Bruins, who were shut out by Salesian in last year’s NCS title game, broke open the rematch with six runs in the sixth inning and six more in the seventh, matching their season high for runs in one game. SPSV (11-1) is now all alone in first place in the Tri-County Athletic League at 3-0.
“We’ve been fighting it out the past few years for NCS and we like the competition,” SPSV manager Rich Gigliotti said of the rival Lady Pride. “Salesian has a great program and it was good to see how we match up with them.”
A ground-rule double by Jaydee Boursaw drove in two runs in the top of the first inning and Olivia Soley followed with an RBI double for a quick 3-0 lead. Salesian (5-3, 2-1 TCAL) loaded the bases in the bottom of the first but couldn’t score, then left two runners on base in each of the next two innings.
SPSV sophomore Neenah Pangilinan broke things open in the sixth. After falling behind 0-2, Pangilinan fouled off several pitches before lining a two-run single. Jennifer Adams and Chelsea Mari followed with singles to make it 6-0, and Boursaw put things away with a three-run homer.
Boursaw had a great day, going 3-for-5 with three runs and five RBIs. Adams went 4-for-5 and scored three times, and Soley, Mari, Taya de Alba and Natalya Ocon each had two hits in a 19-hit SPSV attack.
The Lady Bruins take on Roseville in the opening round of the Woodcreek Tournament on Friday morning.
