SPSV girls volleyball team falls short in loss to Albany

October 1, 2016 by Steve Guertin Leave a Comment

The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High girls varsity volleyball team had visiting Albany on its heels throughout Thursday’s big Tri-County Athletic League match but couldn’t break through in a 26-24, 25-20, 29-27 loss to the Lady Cougars.

It was the second loss in five TCAL matches for the Lady Bruins (14-9, 3-2 TCAL), both losses coming against Albany (11-7, 4-1 TCAL).

“It was disappointing,” said SPSV senior Nikki Lumauod, who returned from a shoulder injury and played for the first time since Sept. 9. “We just didn’t have the mental toughness to win those close sets. We’re still learning to pick ourselves up.”

Albany junior Gretta Kirkby did the most damage with 11 kills. Senior Samaya Hornsby added six kills and Jerri Bonnel had five kills. Caroline Gallagher had another big night for the Lady Bruins, finishing with 11 kills, 13 digs and two aces. Makahla Bolko added 17 digs, five kills and two aces, and Lumauod finished with six kills, five assists and 11 digs.

Other standouts for SPSV included Kamryn Mitchell (14 assists, 10 digs, two kills) and Shaina Snyder (18 digs, three assists).

“I really wanted this game and I feel like we could have won,” Lumauod said. “But it was great being back on the court and rebuilding the connection with all the players.”

SPSV takes part in the Drake Invitational on Saturday and plays at El Cerrito on Tuesday.
