The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High girls volleyball team thought its season ended back on Nov. 5 when the Lady Bruins lost to Acalanes in the North Coast Section Division III quarterfinals. But SPSV was resurrected after earning an unexpected wildcard berth into the Northern California Tournament Division III bracket.
There weren’t enough Section finalists and semifinalists to fill out the 12-team Division III NorCal bracket, so the Lady Bruins – based on their 24-13 overall record and appearance in the NCS Division III quarterfinals – were awarded a No. 11 seed and will play at No. 4 seed Sonora on Thursday night in the NorCal opening round.
“That’s two years in a row we’ve made it to NorCals, so that’s awesome,” said SPSV head coach Danette Domecus. “I thought we played well to finish out the league and Section tournaments. It’s a good thing. Now we have another life.”
Sonora (22-7) went undefeated in the Mother Lode League and went all the way to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III finals before losing to Christian Brothers.
The Lady Wildcats are led by co-captains Riley Patterson and Riley Hemmington, senior Makenna Poole and junior Molly O’Reilly. SPSV is led by All-TCAL players Nikki Lumauod, Makahla Bolko, Shaina Snyder and Caroline Gallagher.
