Coming off one of the most impressive wins in school history, the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity football team will try to keep its undefeated season intact when the Bruins take on the host San Lorenzo Rebels this Saturday afternoon.
The Bruins are off to their first 3-0 start to a season since 2010 and have outscored their opponents 153-12. Last week, SPSV beat previously unbeaten Burton 60-0 after building a 53-0 lead by halftime.
SPSV has been getting big plays on both sides of the ball. Senior quarterback Michael Pappas is having the best season of his career and has been getting plenty of help from teammates Kailon Johnson-Loud, Marquel Johnson, Akil Edwards and Marshel Martin. The Bruin offense has scored at least 45 points in every game this season.
SPSV’s defense has been spectacular, shutting out the last two opponents. Last week against Burton, the Pumas managed a total of 48 yards.
San Lorenzo (0-3) is off to a poor start this season and hasn’t won on the field in 17 straight games. The Rebels fumbled three times – with one being returned for a touchdown – last week in a 26-7 loss at Skyline. The Rebels trailed at home to Galileo, 14-3, at halftime a week prior and fell short in a 20-17 loss. San Lorenzo opened the season with a 45-6 blowout loss at Washington as Huskies running back Patrick Alexander rushed for 247 yards and three touchdowns.
This is the fourth straight road game for SPSV, which plays its home opener Sept. 30 against Harker School.
San Lorenzo’s last victory came at home against Arroyo, 28-24, back on Oct. 11, 2014. It was the only victory for the Rebels that year.
