The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High boys volleyball team wrapped up its sixth consecutive league tournament title with a 25-13, 25-14, 25-14 victory over visiting St. Joe’s in last Thursday’s Tri-County Athletic League championship match.
The victory was a bit of revenge for the Bruins (23-10), who now await seeding into the North Coast Section Tournament. St. Joe’s (13-10) handed the Bruins their first set loss in four years when SPSV won in four sets April 3 in Alameda. The Bruins haven’t lost a league match since the 2008 Bay Shore Athletic League finals. That defeat also came against St. Joe’s.
“We definitely wanted to get some payback,” said SPSV head coach Danette Domecus. “We just had to play our game and not let St. Joe’s get any momentum.”
“We were fired up and wanted revenge,” said senior Matt Bohorquez, who led the Bruins with 12 kills, four blocks and six digs. “It’s a relief since we had a hard time against them last time. It felt good to take it in three.”
“We wanted to beat them really bad and show them we’re the best in this league,” added senior Patrick Lago, who had 32 assists and nine digs.
Ryan Villaseran had seven kills and five digs for the Bruins, who will try to make it four straight NCS championships. Marcus Villalobos added five kills, and Patrick Basco had five blocks, two aces, two kills and four digs.
“We changed some people around and our combinations are finally where we want them to be,” Domecus said. “We’re running a quicker offense and teams don’t know who to block. We’re getting balls down with no one there to challenge it.”
“Everyone is giving everything on the court,” Lago said.
