The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High boys varsity soccer team made some more progress Monday night at Dante Magnani Field.
Junior forward Zack Richards scored a goal in each half for the Bruins, but it wasn’t enough as visiting Kennedy walked away with a 6-2 victory. Still, it was only the second time in 11 games the Bruins had scored more than one goal. SPSV, which had only two substitutes available, played the Eagles tough for 60 minutes before allowing four late goals.
“I knew we were going to get winded but we were very competitive most of the game,” said SPSV head coach Greg Coan. “We weren’t just sitting back and getting pounded. We had a few opportunities.”
The Bruins (2-8-1, 2-6-1 Tri-County Athletic League) scored first midway through the first half when Musa Dajani and Justin Coan worked the ball up the left side to Richards, who popped in his fourth goal in the past three games. The four goals leads the team and accounts for all of SPSV’s scoring in the past three games.
“He’s really flourished in a forward position,” Coan said.
Kennedy scored just before halftime to tie the game, then took a 2-1 lead midway through the second half. The Eagles (10-7-1, 3-3-1) started to take control with two more scores before Richards notched his second goal of the night on a counterattack to make it 4-2 with eight minutes left. Kennedy added two insurance goals against the desperate Bruins.
SPSV goalkeeper Marquis Perrilliat stopped several point-blank shots and kept the Bruins close most of the night.
“He’s a First Team goalkeeper,” Coan said. “I can’t express how well he played in goal.”
The Bruins host Valley Christian on Wednesday and wrap up the TCAL regular season Thursday at home against Pinole Valley.
