The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High boys varsity soccer team will take a win anyway it can get one these days. Wednesday night at Dante Magnani Field, the Bruins picked up a victory without ever scoring a goal.
Visiting Valley Christian didn’t have enough varsity players available and had to forfeit, handing the Bruins their third win of the year. SPSV (3-8-1, 2-6-1 Tri-County Athletic League) hadn’t won a single game in nearly four years prior to this season.
“I told the team they were just afraid to play us,” joked SPSV head coach Greg Coan. “But we’ll take the win and now we have our 10 points. It’s not quite how I envisioned it, but that’s how it is.”
The game with Valley Christian was originally scheduled to take place Dec. 2 but the Vikings (3-11) asked to postpone things until Jan. 28. A school commitment for the team’s seniors prompted the Vikings to hand a victory to SPSV.
Valley Christian did bring its junior varsity squad and played the JV Bruins to a 2-2 tie.
SPSV’s varsity wraps up the regular season with a Senior Night game on Monday at home against Berean Christian. The Bruins open TCAL playoff action Thursday, Feb. 5 at a site to be determined. Coan says he’ll promote a handful of JV players to the varsity roster for the postseason.
