The city is moving the location of its 4th of July fireworks, according to a message by the Benicia Fire Department that was posted on the city of Benicia’s Facebook page.
In the past, the fireworks were launched from a parking lot at the foot of First Street. Starting this year, the fireworks will be launched out of a barge located 1,000 feet off the end of the First Street pier. The Fire Department said this was due to past experiences where the prevailing wind caused the descending fireworks to land in the crowd and combustible vegetation area. To increase public safety, the fireworks will be slightly moved to a place where they will be unable to start fires when they land.
Additionally, the city is requiring boaters in the area to stay at least 1,000 feet from the fireworks barge.
Despite a slight change in location, the fireworks will begin at their usual time of 9 p.m., Tuesday, July 4. Prior to that is the annual Picnic in the Park, featuring family activities, arts and crafts, hot food, music by Motown tribute act West Grand Boulevard and classic rock tribute band TinMan and more. This event will be held from noon to 7 p.m. at City Park, located at the corner of First Street and Military West. Prior to that will be the annual Torchlight Parade at 6:30 p.m., Monday July 3 along First Street. For more information about either event, call Benicia Main Street at 745-9791.
Bob "The Owl" Livesay says
How many folks will complain about the noise that the fire works make. Even the party in the park with music. I hope they complain. It will show the residents that it is just a few very selfish folks. Get ear plugs. I am going to set up a stand downtown on First Street and sell ear plugs.
