Gobble, gobble and a little wobble. The Tim and Jeannie Hamann Foundation will host its first Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov 23.
The 5k race begins at 8 a.m and will not be timed. There will be prizes such as gift baskets and items provided by local businesses, and the event will be free for those 12 years of age and younger. For the older crowd, there is a $25 registration fee. Proceeds from the event go toward the Tim and Jeannie Hamann Foundation, a nonprofit aimed at assisting cancer patients and cancer research.
“The Turkey Trot was something to get out and walk and pay it forward to the community, helping those patients that may need help,” event organizer Wendy Widhalm.
Widhalm became inspired to develop the idea of the Turkey Trot after a discussion with her mother-in-law, who wanted to put on the event because of her father who died of cancer. With the help of her mother-in-law’s foundation, Widhalm was able to organize the Thanksgiving race, which she hopes becomes an annual tradition in Benicia.
“We welcome anybody who wants to walk or run going around Lake Herman down to the Benicia Community Park,” Widhalm said. “It should be pretty fun, relaxed morning. We are grateful and thankful, and people can start Thanksgiving off in a healthy way.”
The Turkey Trot will be held at Benicia Community Park, located at 540 Rose Drive. Registration begins at 7 a.m. on the day of the event. There will also be drawings for raffle prizes.
