A review of DVDs that may be used in sex education classes for Benicia fifth graders resumes Thursday before the Benicia Unified School District Board of Trustees.
Board approval of three Marsh Media DVDs for the Family Life Instruction course — “We’re Just Talking! For Boys and Girls,” “We’re Just Around the Corner,” and “We’re Growing Up” — was postponed Nov. 1 to give parents more opportunity to comment.
Thursday’s agenda includes a public hearing to give parents that chance to weigh in — something Trustee Dana Dean, herself a parent of a district student, said was necessary before the materials could be approved.
“As a parent I’d want to really know that I had an opportunity to review them, and then comment. I have a sense that we might get some comments,” she said Nov. 1.
Dr. Karen Dubrule, director of curriculum and instruction, said a 10-day notice had been given of an Oct. 19 public hearing on the DVDs, but no one attended.
The new hearing will take place during the regular board meeting Thursday.
