Last August, the American Cancer Society held its first Bark For Life event at Benicia Middle School, in which dog owners walked with their canines to raise money toward benefiting cancer research. The event was a success, having raised thousands of dollars.
As one would expect, the event will be held again this year, and the good news is that participants will not have to wait until the end of summer this time. The annual event will be held on May 20 at the First Street Green and is seeking volunteers to assist people with registration on the day of the event and assist with other duties, as well as vendors and sponsors. If you would like to volunteer, please email James Long of participating vendor Pups ’N’ Purrz at james.long63@me.com.
As with last year, the event will feature a live K-9 demonstration by the Benicia Police Department and several food and other vendors. Additionally, there are plans for dog adoptions, a DJ to perform music, a disc dog competition, a dog fashion runway show, doggy Olympics and various dog contests, although these plans are still being finalized.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 20, at the First Street Green, located at 100 First St. near the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot. Preregistration is $15 online and $25 the day of the event. A link to the website will be available soon. Keep reading the Herald as more information becomes available.
