The Benicia Historical Museum’s 2018 Spring Concert Series will come to a close this weekend. Throughout the season, audiences have been treated to the Celtic folk stylings of The Black Irish Band and Golden Bough. On Saturday, they will get to experience another museum concert mainstay: Men of Worth.
For nearly 20 years, the folk duo has been visiting Benicia with their blend of authentic music from the Celtic nations. Men of Worth are made up of Scotsman Donnie Macdonald and Irishman James Keigher who play traditional folk songs from Scotland and Ireland with some Gaelic and instrumentals from the British Isles thrown in as well. Throughout the show, Macdonald and Keigher will also tell stories of their time from their homeland.
Keigher and Macdonald formed Men of Worth in 1986. Begining in 2003, the duo began a tour of service of Scotland and Ireland. The two switch off leading the group when the tour visits either Scotland or England. The pair has given around 60 tours, and a lot of the people who will be at the show are a part of the tour.
This year, Men of Worth gave five tours of the British Isles. Prior to embarking on a tour, the duo spends two years researching where they want to go before offering their services.
Macdonald said what draws Men of Worth back to Benicia is being able to play in a venue that is comfortable and fun following the demanding physicality of leading a tour.
The Men of Worth concert begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 21 at the Benicia Historical Museum, located at 2060 Camel Road. Doors open at 7 p.m., and a no-host bar will be available. Ticket prices for the show are $25 and can be purchased at the museum’s gift shop, online at BrownPaperTickets.com or at Bookshop Benicia, located at 636 First St. For more information, email info@beniciahistoricalmuseum.org or call 745-5735.
