Solano Community College, with the help of the city of Vallejo and the owner of a vacant car dealership, has opened an automobile tech center that will teach students to service and repair engines, transmissions and electronics and fix hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles, Veronica Jacobson, marketing manager for the development firm Kitchell, said.
College, city and area business representatives cut the ribbon Thursday afternoon on the new educational site, 1301 Georgia St., Vallejo. The center is the former Wilson-Cornelius Ford dealership.
Solano Community College revived its automotive technician training program in 2013 after a seven-year hiatus, Jacobson said. The new center will give students the opportunity to earn various automotive certifications as well as an associate of science degree, she said.
The 16,000-square-foot building has classrooms and 11 work stations outfitted with vehicle lifts, diagnostic equipment and tools.
Jacobson said her company provided program and management services to the college for several small capital improvement projects, including the renovation of the Auto Tech building.
