Construction began Tuesday that will make it safer for children to travel to three local schools, Nouae Vue, associate civil engineer, said.
The Benicia Safe Route To School construction is a three-fold project that affects ways to reach Robert Semple and Matthew Turner elementary schools and Benicia Middle School, Vue said, and will take until September to complete
At Robert Semple Elementary Schoo, 2015 East Third St., workers will install one concrete sidewalk on Linda Vista Street near Vista Grande Avenue, and another sidewalk on El Bonito Way near Corte Del Sol.
At Matthew Turner Elementary School, 540 Rose Drive, construction includes building crosswalks and bulbouts – bulging curb extension – at the intersection of Dempsey Drive and the entrance to the Community Park parking lot.
At Benicia Middle School, 1100 Southampton Road, the project will provide advanced flashing beacons and accessible curb ramps at Southampton Road and Turner Drive, Vue said.
“While the work is underway, the affected streets will remain open to traffic at all times,” Vue said. “However, traffic patterns will be changed to allow the improvements to be constructed, and reduced speeds will be in effect to ensure safe passage through the construction zone.”
Motorists should plan for minor delays while the work is being done, Vue said.
JJR Construction of San Mateo was awarded the $123,910 contract after project was open to public bids. The company was the lowest bidder. Most of the funding for the project has come from a federal Safe Routes To School grant.
