The path, which extends from Military West to the main park entrance, was closed for what a California Department of Parks and Recreation news release described as “a much-needed re-paving project” that had been in the works for over a year.
Jon Van Landschoot, a senior park aide and volunteer coordinator with Benicia parks, expressed gratitude that the project was finally under way.
“I’m very happy, but it’s been a long time coming,” he said.
Van Landschoot had a chance to survey the trail as it was being paved Wednesday and was pleased with the results.
“It looked good, but I’m sad the asphalt guys had to work in this heat,” he said.
“Still, with any improvements to this park, I’m pleased.”
Van Landschoot also expressed interest in other improvements he said should be made to the park.
“I’d like to see better signage and the whole park repaved and re-striped,” he said. “I’d also like to see a better walking trail out to Dillon Point.”
The repaving project was supported by funds from California State Parks, the city of Benicia, the city of Vallejo and Solano County.
