Benicia High senior Luis Ramirez finished in first place in the boys varsity race at last Saturday’s Sac-Joaquin Section Sub-Section Championships at Frogtown in Angels Camp.
Ramirez ran the course in 15:55.9, finishing first out of 184 runners and qualifying for this Saturday’s Section Championships at Willow Hill in Folsom. Teammate Daylon Garcia also qualified for the Section Championships after taking seventh place with a time of 16:49.1.
Benicia senior Rachel Kravitz finished 52nd overall (23:00.2) out of 147 runners in the girls varsity race but managed to snag the 10th and final individual qualifying spot in the Section Championships. Teammate Rayna Fitzgerald was right behind, finishing 11th (23:02) and missing Sections by one spot.
Benicia’s varsity boys finished 12th out of 24 teams and finished with 362 points. Senior Joseph Carrillo was 96th in 19:54.5, followed by juniors Spencer Terry (148th in 21:59.4), Michael Hickey (153rd in 22:33.8), Hector Cordero (177th in 27:01.8) and Kevin McLarty (179th in 28:49.9).
Rio Americano won the boys varsity team title with a low score of 49 points. Vista del Lago was second (73) and Placer was third (89). Vanden finished sixth and advanced to Sections as a team.

Benicia senior Asha Woodmansee finished 71st in 24:00. Junior Savannah Gomez was 89th in 25:07.2.
Benicia’s frosh/soph boys finished third in Sub-Sections with 109 points and qualified for Sections as a team. Jacob Hoenig took third place (12:08.9) out of 120 runners. Ignacio Clemente was 24th in 13:05.3, followed by Noah Hoenig (32nd in 13:17.5), Johnny Rentfro (35th in 13:30.6) and Brandon Ferrer (40th in 13:35.8).
Vista del Lago won with 72 points. El Camino tied Benicia with 109 points but took second place on a tiebreaker.
In the Sub-Section freshman boys race, Jackson Yacullo (fifth in 12:30.8) and Jun Chang (26th in 13:27.9) each qualified for Sections as individuals. Teammate Reid Burford finished 44th in 14:09.8 out of 91 runners.
In the Sub-Section frosh/soph girls race, Alexandra Menjibar-Moore took third place in 13:45.6 and qualified for Sections. Other individual Section qualifiers for Benicia included Hannah Keala (seventh in 14:09.7) and Isabelle LaFountain (28th in 16:13.2).
