A beautiful flag waves over the Land of the Free
A star for every state that it must oversee
Its fold and its stripes each number thirteen
Declaring boldly our rights, each one overseen
The right to bear arms; a slave none shall be
Freedom of speech, even if all disagree
Petition my government for a full redress
Religious freedom protected, as I choose to express
Unreasonable searched are never allowed
My home is my castle, my freedom unbowed
None shall infringe as I shall secretly vote
My choice I scream loudly with no sounds from my throat
Dare to accuse me, I shall publicly confront
My trial is by jury; only once, no witch-hunt
A grand jury accuse me, I shall have the right
To be steadfast and silent, against all of your might
Some powers are granted to federal triumvirate;
All the rest of the power belongs to each state
Challenged we were, by threats so extreme
Each time we prevailed and showed freedom supreme
Again we are challenged by fanatics worldwide
Again we’ll prevail, our flag at our side
At the end of history, there is standing but one
It’s Old Glory waving; its colors don’t run
The above poem was written in 2002 and delivered at an Exchange Club meeting in Washington, D.C. that year.
