I went to see my primary physician
About a pre-existing condition;
The waiting room was crowded, it was plain to see;
Yet a man managed to sit next to me.
He started to speak up and assumed I’d concur
When out of his mouth came a racial slur;
In fact, two of them
“That’s a viewpoint which you’ll never win,
‘Cause we’re all God’s children under the skin” (I said)
“Who are you, a priest or a Jew? (He asked)
Why should that be of any concern to you?” (I responded)
“Just look at these people,” he said in disgust
“Can’t you see? They’re not like us!”
At this point they called out my name;
I got up but felt some real consternation;
That we hadn’t finished our conversation.
And while I’ve never seen him since that day
I’ve wondered if somewhere along the way
He’s changed and knows it’s not a sin
To understand the truth…
That we’re all God’s children, Under the skin.
Even him.
