Stephen Slater, principal of Matthew Turner Elementary School (Center) welcomes students back for the first Character Assembly of the 2018-19 school year Friday. A lot of items were packed into the assembly, including an overview of the school’s Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports rules, an introduction of new staff, public appreciation of Benicia Unified School District’s Maintenance and Operations Department workers for their job repainting the school over the summer, a presentation on the school’s new solar panels and a celebration of the school’s 25th anniversary. Slater delivered a slideshow featuring images of the school’s 19th-century shipbuilder namesake (pictured on screen), construction and early yearbook photos of longtime current teachers.
