Benicia State Parks Association paid tribute to 20th-century syndicated Hearst columnist and Benicia native Elsie Robinson in the chambers of Benicia’s Capitol building Sunday. Benicia High School graduate Sheena Beeson (left) portrayed Robinson and read excerpts from the columnist’s 1934 autobiography “I Wanted Out,” including her descriptions of Benicia, the pact she made with God in the City Cemetery, her days as a miner, getting a job as a columnist, her relationship with her first husband and more. Peter Bray (Right) portrayed Robinson’s third husband Benton Fremont and talked about their wedding as well as the Fremont family, namely grandfather Sen. John C. Fremont and his opposition to slavery ahead of the Civil War. The event had a healthy turnout as people filled the chamber to learn about California history and a Benician who made it big.
