Benicia High School band member Reshma Vydyarakath plays the national anthem on trumpet over the school’s PA system as part of a 9/11 memorial tribute yesterday morning. The tribute– held on the 17th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York City, Virginia and Pennsylvania– was organized by the school’s student leadership under the advisory of Activities Director Mary Wheat and also featured a memorial announcement and poem read by student Olivia Contreras. Elsewhere in the city, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church commemorated the anniversary by ringing the historic bell 2,996 times– one for each life lost that day– beginning at 8:46 a.m.– the same time the hijackings began on that day in 2001. Additionally, flags were set up at City Park from 7 a.m. until the evening. Lloyd Christiansen played bagpipes until 6 p.m., and Fire Department personnel were present at the site throughout the day.
