The days of colorless traffic signal control boxes in Benicia are coming to an end. As part of the Public Art Initiative, the boxes are being given new designs throughout the city. Above is a finished box on the trail by Eunice Jensen Park leading to the library, with artwork commissioned by Benicia High Schoolers Jiana Lyons and Samantha Johnson. The front of the box features a person reading a book underneath a tree. The sides feature bookshelves bearing the titles of popular stories, books about Benicia (such as “Legends of the Straits” by Bruce Robinson and “Great Expectations: The Story of Benicia” by Richard Dillon) and works written by legendary authors who had ties to Benicia, such as Jack London and Stephen Vincent Benet. Bill Gian also completed a design on the box at the corner of Military and Southampton, and Cody Frisinger emblazoned a box at the corner of East 2nd Street and Rose Drive with a beehive design.
