Panthers sweep American Canyon in water polo

September 24, 2016 by Steve Guertin Leave a Comment

Benicia High’s varsity water polo teams pulled off a sweep of host American Canyon in last Thursday’s Solano County Athletic Conference openers, with the Panther boys winning 16-8 and the Lady Panthers winning 8-6.

Jason Own had six goals for the Panther boys, who improved to 3-5 overall. Three of Own’s goals came in the third quarter as Benicia built a commanding 11-3 lead.

Esther Hurst and Chloe Bonini combined for seven of Benicia’s eight goals in the girls game. Sophie Silberman also scored for the Lady Panthers (5-4, 1-0 SCAC).

“The girls had some lulls and lost a little bit of focus but reeled it back in for a really strong finish,” said Benicia coach Donny Mata. “The boys controlled from the get go and stayed aggressive. They made some mental errors that got us in bad situations defensively and that kept AC in the game. Both of our teams are just trying to clean things up to finish the season at our peak.”

Benicia plays at Dixon on Tuesday and hosts Fairfield at Cunningham Pool on Thursday.
