Benicia High’s varsity football team was given the No. 6 seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs and will play a first-round “home” game this Thursday night at Corbus Field in Vallejo against the Burbank Titans.

It’s the eighth straight playoff appearance for the Panthers, who have won in the opening round three times in the past four years. The No. 6 seed is the highest for the Panthers since earning the No. 6 seed in 2009. Benicia is looking for its first football Section championship since 1982.

The Panthers (6-4) won their final four games of the regular season and earned a Solano County Athletic Conference co-championship with American Canyon and Vanden. American Canyon (8-2) got a No. 2 seed and will host No. 15 El Camino on Thursday while No. 9 seed Vanden (6-4) plays at No. 8 Vista del Lago.

No. 11 seeded Burbank (Sacramento) also went 6-4 during the regular season and finished second in the Metropolitan League. The Titans won six of their final seven games and are averaging 39.5 points per game.

Thursday’s winner will advance to the quarterfinals against the winner between No. 3 seed Christian Brothers and No. 14 seed Cordova.

The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity football team was given the No. 5 seed in the North Coast Section Division V playoffs and will host No. 12 seed St. Francis of Watsonville on Friday night at Dante Magnani Field.

The Bruins went 7-3 during the regular season and finished tied for fourth place in the Tri-County Athletic League’s Rock Division. The St. Francis Sharks went 6-5 but have lost three straight games entering the postseason.

SPSV is looking for its first NCS championship since winning the Class A title in 2006.
