Fifty years ago in San Francisco was the Summer of Love. Pups ’N’ Purrz and Umbrella of Hope have no intention of topping that cultural touchstone, but they still will be celebrating in their own way.
This Saturday, the Benicia-based pet supply store and the Pittsburg-based animal rescue agency will join forces for an adoption event, as they have many times in the past. However, this adoption event— called the Summer Love Adoption Special— will be a little bigger than most, which will feature multiple vendors in addition to adoptable animals.
One of the partners is LuLaRoe, a clothing company that sells everything from leggings, dresses, skirts and even children’s and men’s clothing with 30 percent of the proceeds going toward nonprofit organizations.
“That’s why Umbrella of Hope is using them,” Pups ’N’ Purrz owner James Long said. “30 percent of the profits do come back to Umbrella of Hope.”
There will also be a bake sale, featuring dog and human treats. Long will be providing shortbread cookies, which will be supplied by Benicia’s very own Whipt Baked Goods.
The event will also feature a multitude of demonstrations from other agencies. Starting at 11 a.m. there will be a K-9 demonstration by the Benicia Police Department, a dog leash demonstration by San Ramon pet supply store Sadie’s Pet Products and an air purifier demonstration by Rainbow Cleaning Systems, a raffle with prizes and more.
Long said this event is one of the bigger ones to be held at his store.
“I’ve done adoption events where I’ve done multiple groups but nothing where I’ve had the adoption group (with) a pop-up tent,” he said.
The Summer Love Adoption Special will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, July 8 at Pups ’N’ Purrz, located at 422 First St. Adult dogs and kittens will be available to adopt for $25, and puppies will be available to adopt for $100.
