Have a creative idea that you would like to share with the community? Benicia Makerspace is here to help.
The Benicia Mini Maker Faire, the city’s technological Woodstock, will be returning to Benicia Middle School for its third year on Sunday, April 2 to once again showcase the unique ideas of Bay Area makers, all while providing fun interactive exhibits for the entire family. Last year featured scale models of engines, sculptures made out of masking tape, stations to create giant bubbles, a 45-foot stream to float paper boats in, an electric vehicle exhibit, a laser maze, full-scale replicas of R2-D2 and BB-8 from “Star Wars” and more.
Benicia Makerspace is looking for makers, performers, crafters and food vendors for this year’s festival. Makerspace Head Organizer Aaron Newcomb said the possibilities are wide open.
“What are we looking for? Pretty much whatever you make or do that you’re passionate about, as long as it’s something you can share with others,” he said in a statement. “Maker Faire features a huge range of things: robots and electronics projects, homesteading arts, environmental sustainable projects, kooky inventions, poetry writing, screen printing, music making, crafts and hacks of all kind… Anything Do-It-Yourself, and especially anything Do-It-Together.”
Newcomb noted that inclusion in this event is a good springboard for the Bay Area Maker Faire, which will be held at the San Mateo Event Center from May 19 to 21.
Interested applicants for the Benicia Mini Maker Faire should fill out an online form, which is available at benicia.makerfaire.com/call-for-makers/application/. Questions will ask about the idea you would like to exhibit, production needs, contact information and more. The deadline for application is Friday, March 3.
The Mini Maker Faire will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, April 2 at Benicia Middle School, located at 1100 Southampton Road. For more information on the Faire or application, email Newcomb at aaron@BeniciamakerSpace.com.
