Former Benicia High star Michelle Li is having a successful sophomore season playing women’s soccer for Dominican Universiy of California.
Li, who graduated from Benicia High in 2015, was named the PacWest women’s soccer Player of the Week for games played Oct. 3-10. Li tallied eight points in a 2-0-1 week for the Penguins.
Li played a part in all three scores in a 3-1 win over U.C. Santa Cruz. She scored the first goal in the 15th minute, assisted the game-winner in the 36th minute, and added her second goal 39 seconds into the second half.
After a 0-0 draw with Fresno Pacific, Li had a goal and an assist in a comeback victory over Holy Names. Down 3-2 in the 79th minute, Li fed Ivy Torres, who then found Lily Dubuc on the right wing for the equalizing score. Two minutes later, Li put a shot into the left corner for the victory. Li had nine shots on the week, putting five on goal.
Li, who is studying nursing at Dominican University of California in San Rafael, has scored five goals and dished out two assists through Sunday.
Li ranks among the greatest female athletes ever to don a Lady Panther uniform at Benicia High. She was the No. 1 singles player for Benicia’s girls tennis team, which won the school’s first-ever Sac-Joaquin Section championship in 2014. She was a leader in every sense of the word as a guard for Benicia’s girls basketball team, which had a 13-4 record in 2014-15 before a knee injury ended her high school playing career.
And then there’s soccer, where she made varsity as a freshman and led Benicia in goals and points in 2014.
Dominican, currently 3-4-4 overall and 2-2-2 in the PacWest, hosts Notre Dame de Namur on Friday afternoon.
