Maximillian Rex Heian Burgess-Shannon: Middle school kings and queens (Law Day honorable mention)

Some places have Kings and Queens, some have a Democratic Leader, some have Head Families and some have no government at all. But I’m here to tell about the government of Middle School. Well, not a government, more like the separate powers that run the place.
To begin, first you have the Principal. He heads up the staff and teachers, but then the parents sometimes direct teachers. Teachers direct the staff and the students. The Staff is also supposed to direct the students.
Now, that adults are out of the way, let’s move on to the students. First let’s dissect the students. Off the bat, you have the main branches: Cool Kids and Braniacs, Beauty Girls and Imo kids. Now for the sub categories or lower branches: Wannabe Cool Kids, Imo Braniacs , Artists, Cool Braniacs and Beauty Girls who are Artists, Cool Kid Artists, Imo Cool kids, I could go on. But I have left one out for later.
Now for what makes the separation of power work at Middle School. Here comes those kids I didn’t mention before: the Mathletes. They are the balance of every thing, they are the kids who tell the staff what all the students like. Now you might say, “Hey, but I thought that the Cool Kids headed up everybody.” No, the Cool Kids would be nothing with out the Mathletes. The Mathletes keep the Cool Kids on the football team, by helping them with their home work. Don’t make the mistake of confusing the Mathletes with “Nerds.” The Mathletes are the kids that know how to help the Cool Kids when they get something wrong. They know how to talk to them. Nerds have a hard time talking to anyone.
Now there are many types of Mathletes. I could tell you all about them, but then we would be up all night. So on to separation of power. The Mathlete’s influence the main the main branches who go to the lower branches and tell them what is up. The Mathletes are generally the students you find in Leadership and other clubs. That’s why they can keep the teachers informed.
I know the reason you may think the Cool Kids control everything is because they are big and loud, and the Mathletes might be confused with Wannabes, except they can talk on the same level to the Cool Kids and they don’t care much about being cool. They know smart is better. The Cool Kids are nice to them, because they know if they pi** off the Mathletes, their grades go good-bye. Some of the most popular Cool Kids are actually Braniacs. But not many.
I hope you enjoyed this insight to the life of a middle schooler.

The above essay was an honorable mention in the city of Benicia’s Law Day contest.  The theme this year was “Separation of Powers.”
