The tall flagpole that stands in front of the historic Mare Island Hospital in Vallejo will be dedicated Friday morning in a ceremony attended by U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson.
The hospital was built in 1869. Since 1999 it has been one of 23 buildings that houses Touro University California, a private, nonprofit health professionals graduate school that has about 1,400 students studying in various public health fields.
Touro will dedicate the refurbished historic flagpole, and Thompson, who represents Benicia in the U.S. House, will provide the flag that will be raised on the pole.
That flag has been flown above the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. It will be the first banner the pole will bear since Sept. 11, 2001.
Among those participating in the dedication are U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Steven Powell, who will sing the national anthem, the U.S. Naval Color Guard from San Jose and the U.S. Army Military Band.
Those attending may take campus tours, and refreshments will be served.
The flagpole dedication will start at 10 a.m. Friday at Touro University California, 1545 Azuar Drive, Mare Island, Vallejo. Those interested may call 707-638-5205.
