The Napa/Solano Central Labor Council (NSLC), a labor collective representing Napa and Solano counties, announced its endorsements in local races via a Facebook post.
According to the post, the NSCLC held 53 interviews with candidates in races throughout Solano and Napa counties over several days with a panel of more than 30 affiliate leaders. The goal was to seek candidates who they felt would serve the needs of labor workers. The recommendations were ratified by the NSCLC and Napa Solano Building and Construction Trades. Members voted at a delegate meeting to ratify the votes which were announced Saturday.
In the Benicia City Council race, the NSCLC endorsed the same two candidates it endorsed in 2016: Economic Development Chair Lionel Largaespada and former Councilmember Christina Strawbridge. Planning Commission Chair Kari Birdseye and retired journeyman carpenter William Emes are also in the race.
In the school board election, the NSCLC endorsed challengers Adrean Hayashi, Mark Maselli and Sheri Zada over incumbent Trustee Diane Ferrucci and fellow challenger Gethsemane Moss.
In the race for Area 3 of the Solano County Board of Education, which encompasses Benicia, the NSCLC endorsed incumbent Trustee Dana Dean, who is running unopposed.
The NSCLC will be introducing its endorsed candidates at its annual Labor Day breakfast at Iron Workers Local Union 378. The breakfast will celebrate the contributions of the labor movement and include speeches by Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Napa), Rep. John Garamendi (D-Fairfield), Sen. Bill Dodd (D-Napa), Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D-Winters). The breakfast will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, Sept. 3 at Iron Workers 378, located at 3120 Bayshore Road. It will be interesting to see if any candidate will seize the day on the “new economic frontier” as Benicia looks “actively to the future by embracing the potential of the cannabis industry” as we work
“to tap into not just the neighborhood consumer base but regional consumer bases as well”. This means $$$ rolling in, but so far just generalized visions, avoiding positions on cannabusiness in Benicia, now here and part of a long range economic plan.
*Note to all candidates; the election is on Nov. 6th, not Nov. 8th.

Sorry Stan the City of Benicia is actively pursuing the cannabis business. As they said at the meeting last week “:we are open for business”. The applicants have until Sept. 10 to get their applications in. We will then see what the interest will be in store front and industrial park business opportunities. Do you have your application ready to submit Stan.?

Very apparent the Labor Board does not want to endorse anti labor candidates. So Birdseye is out.
