Taking Mississippi’s lead
I recently read in the Wall Street Journal an article by Melissa Korn about how the University of Mississippi will rename Vardaman Hall, its administrative building.
For those who do not know, James K. Vardaman was a former Mississippi governor and U.S. Senator who once said “If it is necessary, every negro in the state will be lynched; It will be done to maintain white supremacy.”
May I suggest James Meridith and Medgar Evers Hall as the replacement name?
Ms. Korn’s article concludes, “In 2015, Ole Miss removed the state flag, which includes the Confederate battle emblem, and other universities in Mississippi have followed suit.”
I think it’s time for The Union Hotel on First Street to remove the Confederate flag from its stained glass window. No darker symbol of America’s racism comes to mind.

Thanks to local business
My daughter Katie is competing this weekend in the Miss Teen pageant in Oakland. We wanted to thank local businessman Chris Harrigfeld with CT Hot Rods in Benicia for his generous sponsorship! His support is very appreciated, and we thought he should be recognized.
