Thank you, LWV
It is essential in our representative form of democracy that we, the public, take an interest and participate in our own governance especially at the local level.
I would like to thank the Benicia chapter of the League of Women Voters for organizing and presenting its 13th annual Meet Your Local Officials event at the Commanding Officer’s Quarters on Feb. 23. In addition, thanks to the volunteers of Carquinez Village for their assistance.
It was an incredible honor to join fellow city of Benicia staff, commissioners, board members, the chiefs of police and fire, and councilmembers along with representatives from Assemblyman Tim Grayson and State Sen. Bill Dodd’s office.
I also want to express my appreciation for the opportunity to meet and speak with many residents at the event. There are so many things to do on a Friday night, and I am grateful that many made the time to talk with us about the issues and concerns in the community that are important to them.
The mission of the all-volunteer League of Women Voters of Benicia is to promote political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government and to act on selected governmental issues.
Nationwide, LWV operates with over 1,000 local chapters. In Benicia, we are fortunate to have an active organization that hosts multiple events on a monthly which are open and free to all members of the community.
Thank you again to the League of Women Voters of Benicia for an engaging and informative event. I look forward to attending another event very soon.

Benicia Economic Development Board chairman
Also concerned about cannabis
I am responding to Michael Escobosa’s February 27th letter, “Cannabis vote a mistake.”
I agree. I believe that the proposed sale and growth of cannabis in such a small town would be a major blight on an otherwise lovely city.
Grace Murphy-Jenkins,
