Celebrating the Benicia Certified Farmers Market
Today is Opening Day on First Street for the Benicia Certified Farmers Market. Located between B and D Street downtown, our seasonal market is open every Thursday evening (4 to 8 p.m. April through August and 4 to 7 p.m. September through October) through Oct. 26.
It may come as a surprise to many Benicians and our neighbors from surrounding communities that the Benicia Certified Farmers Market is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
Benicia’s farmers market is one of more than 8,400 markets operating in the United States. Our farmers market is an economic and community centerpiece in Benicia. For local consumers, it fills the growing demand for fresh and healthy food, and for local farmers and merchants an equally important income opportunity. When food and goods are grown, produced and sold within the same region, more money stays in the local economy.
In addition to farm fresh produce, the Benicia Certified Farmers Market offers arts and crafts vendors, specialty foods, baked goods and numerous gourmet good vendors. There is even a bounce house for the kids on the First Street Green.
Who knew 25 years ago the Benicia Certified Farmers Market would grow into a remarkable place for growers, producers and consumers to gather each Thursday from April through October? Congratulations to the city of Benicia, Benicia Main Street, the vendors and visitors. Here’s to another 25 years, and hope to see you at the famers market.
