Another POV on cannabis
I am not part of an anti-cannabis assembly. I’m coming from a different view of pot.
Benicia is such a small town that we have only one main street. All the other surrounding streets are residential. The downtown is one street only. Think about it. Walk down First Street, and you will see parents with children, strollers and dogs as well as shoppers and bikers. These are the very people we have been attracting because of our business plans to enhance and enrich the Benicia experience.
I don’t believe the city of Benicia should be in the business of issuing licenses for the sale of cannabis, especially on First Street. It is a lousy solution for increasing the tax base. Actually as a cash business, how will there be any accountability of sales and taxes? Where will all the money go? Store owners can’t use the banks!
You better believe law enforcement will be a problem. Just go to City Park, and you would never know it’s illegal to smoke pot in public.
The reason we have a small-town atmosphere in Benicia is because we are a small town. Some new businesses are in the process of opening their doors on First Street. Welcome them and support them.
