Special to the Herald
Donna Covey’s paintings are scintillating at Milinda Perry Salon and Gallery on 117 East F Street. She calls herself a “Fauve Expressionist” which translates into being colorful, “free form”, vibrant and decorative.
All of her paintings at the gallery fit this description. She also takes advantage of her background in architecture. She loves old buildings spruced up with her paint brush. Her choice of the Union Hotel and The Relik Tavern represent this focus. She also sprinkles people into the work- people representing the area. A couple marches toward the “Union Hotel.”
The alleys of Benicia are depicted in “Peggy Martin Lane” and “Tackle Shop,” both with a vibrant lense.
She likes to highlight large objects like the Tugboat in “Joy of Benicia.”This is a favorite artist viewing spot where Ms. Covey adds her lively swatch. Her Truckee picture uses the railroad tracks to frame the town.
She enjoys puting the light on advertising signs, mostly “old school” wood which give that quaint look to her paintings. This appears in her “Vegetable Patch” in Suisun. We don’t need to see the patch- the sign welcomes us.
Her work gives a carnival flavor to hot spots in a variety of East Bay towns. Come while the show is in town until April.
