Benicia High’s girls varsity basketball team wasn’t at its best Saturday at home against Chavez, but the Lady Panthers were good enough to win, 41-38.
It was the eighth win in nine games this season for the Lady Panthers, who don’t play again until this Saturday at Rodriguez. It was also the fourth win in five days for Benicia.
Senior Michelle Li had 12 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals for Benicia, which is 2-0 at home this season. Teammate Elizabeth Sweeney added 12 points, and Kameron Hatcher chipped in with seven points and three steals. Kaylan Lockrem had five points and six rebounds.
Senior forward Danyelle Thompson had a game-high 16 points for Chavez.
Benicia led 13-10 after one quarter and 24-18 at the break. The Lady Panthers pushed their lead to eight in the second half before Chavez (1-10) rallied late to make things close.
Chavez had numerous opportunities to steal a win from the Lady Panthers (8-1) but went only 2-of-16 at the free throw line.
