Benicia High’s girls golf team shot its best round in eight years and beat visiting American Canyon, 228-259, Tuesday afternoon at the Mare Island Golf Course.
The 228 was Benicia’s best round since 2006 and was only 12 strokes off the all-time Lady Panther record (216 against Rodriguez), also set in 2006.
“That’s an outstanding score for us in recent years,” Benicia head coach Nan Prolo said of her team’s 228. “It was a good day.”
Benicia picked a great time to shoot its best round in eight years since American Canyon’s 259 was that program’s best score ever.
Jennifer Eleccion birdied the third hole and shot a 41 for Benicia to earn co-medalist honors along with American Canyon’s Ryanne Ford. American Canyon had two players shoot in the 40s and three players shoot in the 50s. Benicia had four players break 50.
Freshman Sofia Young birdied the fifth hole and finished with a 42 for the Lady Panthers. Teammate Rachel Mahrt didn’t have any birdies but was consistent all day with a 43. Nicole Ramirez birdied the fourth hole and shot a 49, one of her best rounds this year.
“She was very excited and bouncing around,” Prolo said of Ramirez. “Her score is finally back to where she thinks it should be.”
Catherine Mahrt rounded out Benicia’s scorecard with a 53.
The Lady Panthers improved to 9-0 in the Solano County Athletic Conference and has a commanding hold on first place. Every other team in the conference has at least three losses.
Depth has been the key to Benicia’s success.
“A lot of teams have one or two good individual golfers; it all comes down to the 4, 5 and 6 players to know who’s going to move on in the playoffs,” Prolo said.
