It wasn’t pretty, but the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High girls varsity basketball team won its 2014-15 debut last Wednesday night, beating host Berean Christian, 38-21.
Both teams struggled in the first half and had to shake off the cobwebs after a long offseason. But the Lady Bruins (1-0) found a rhythm in the second half and managed to pull away.
Senior center Kelly Dennis was a monster under the boards in the second half and finished with nine rebounds and five blocks. Sophomore Wanna Wong, who played for the SPSV junior varsity last season, had a big offensive night in her varsity debut and poured in a game-high 16 points.
“It was very slow and very sloppy in the beginning, and I think foul trouble bothered some of my post players,” said SPSV head coach Nadine Walker. “But in the second half, Kelly did much more by getting rebounds and blocks, and I think Wanna felt a little more comfortable.”
Sophomore Neenah Pangelinan had a solid all-around game with eight steals and five assists, and junior Selena Caoile added six steals against a Berean Christian (0-1) team that couldn’t handle SPSV’s press. Freshman Eva Dominguez chipped in with five rebounds.
The Lady Bruins take on Petaluma in the Drake Tournament on Thursday.
