The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High varsity softball team had its 16-game winning streak come to an end after a pair of losses on the final day of the Woodcreek Tournament in Roseville last Saturday.
The Lady Bruins opened the tournament Friday with a convincing 16-3 victory over Antelope, then came back later in the day and whipped River City, 8-1. But not much went right for SPSV on Saturday.
Vacaville sophomore pitcher Katie Kibby held the Lady Bruins to only three hits as the Lady Bulldogs won, 2-0. Vacaville, ranked No. 4 in the state, went on to win the tournament and is 16-0-1 overall this season. SPSV (16-2) had a chance to break open a scoreless game in the fifth inning with runners at second and third and no one out, but Kibby pitched her way out of the jam and Vacaville scored two runs in the sixth inning.
“Vacaville’s really good,” said SPSV coach Rich Gigliotti. “We played them tough and had a chance to beat them but didn’t do it.”
The Lady Bruins had to wait four hours before taking on Casa Roble and ended up losing, 11-3. Casa Roble broke the game open with eight runs in the sixth inning. The Lady Bruins finished in fourth place.
SPSV plays at Campolindo on Tuesday and hosts Pinole Valley on Wednesday.
