Needing a victory last Thursday to pull into a tie for first place in the Tri-County Athletic League, the St. Patrick-St. Vincent High girls varsity volleyball team came up just short, losing in five sets to host St. Mary’s, 20-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-17, 15-11.
St. Mary’s finished the regular season at 7-1 in the TCAL while SPSV dropped to 5-3. Both teams await seeding into the TCAL playoffs, which begin this coming Thursday.
“It was very disappointing,” SPSV senior Nikki Lumauod said after the loss. “We didn’t show any mental toughness and our serve receive let us down again. We played well in the first two sets but couldn’t close it out.”
Caroline Gallagher had another solid match for the Lady Bruins with 15 kills and 25 digs. Lumauod finished with 22 assists and five kills while Makahla Bolko added 13 digs and 10 kills. Candice Turk had eight kills and Kamryn Mitchell had 23 assists.
The Lady Bruins are 21-11 overall heading into the postseason. SPSV is expected to draw a first-round home match in the TCAL playoffs. St. Mary’s (12-10), whose only TCAL loss came against SPSV in five sets back on Sept. 27, earned the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye.
