The St. Patrick-St. Vincent High girls varsity volleyball team is red hot heading into this week’s Tri-County Athletic League championships.
The Lady Bruins closed out the 2014 regular season with a hard-fought 25-22, 25-27, 25-20, 25-18 victory over host Salesian last Thursday. It was the 11th victory in the past 12 matches for the Lady Bruins, who improved to 20-12 overall this year.
“We’re so ready,” SPSV senior Julia Kistner said of the TCAL playoffs, which begin this Thursday. “Ever since we won the NorCal Invitational things have been going better. We’ve picked it up defensively and we’re getting into a rhythm.”
SPSV senior Malia Bolko had another strong night with 19 kills and 20 digs. Isabel Villalobos added 14 kills and nine digs, and Halle Webster had six kills and three blocks. Kistner chipped in with four assists and 18 digs, Catherine Cortez had 23 assists and eight digs, and Nikki Lumauod had 14 assists and seven digs.
The Lady Bruins finished tied with Albany for second place in the final TCAL regular season standings, each team at 7-3. St. Joe’s went 10-0 and has the No. 1 seed entering the TCAL playoffs. SPSV must wait for a coaches meeting Monday that will break the SPSV/Albany tie and determine the No. 2 seed.
