A juvenile admitted to setting the fire that occurred Tuesday afternoon in Benicia Public Library’s bathroom.
Benicia Fire Department responded to a call from the library about smoke in the restroom. When the fire crew arrived, they evacuated the building before discovering a small fire in the library’s restroom, which was extinguished using a portable fire extinguisher.
Once the smoke was cleared by using a portable blower, the fire alarm was reset and the library was able to reopen.
Benicia police and fire departments analyzed surveillance tapes and identified individuals who had entered and exited the restroom before the fire started, according to a fire department news release. Those individuals were still present and were interviewed by police.
During the interview process, a juvenile admitted to lighting the fire, the news release stated. The juvenile was taken into custody and later released to their parents.
The damage to the library was limited to a paper dispenser in the restroom, and minor smoke damage in the area, officials said.
