Motorists traveling Interstate 780 through Benicia at night this week will encounter Caltrans contractors sealing pavement cracks in preparation for repaving the highway next month.
Crews will be working on both directions of the highway, and will will maintain one open lane on I-780 at all times, according to a California Department of Transporation traffic advisory.
The repairs will be done between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. during the week, Caltrans said, and at times on and off ramps will be closed for up to two hours, but will be reopened as soon as the construction material cools and can accommodate traffic.
No two adjacent ramp interchanges will be closed at the same time, the advisory said.
Detour signs have been set up, but remain covered until the detours are in effect, it said.
The work is part of a major project that includes overlay and pavement repair on the interstate highway that connects Benicia to Vallejo, said Vince Jacala, a member of Caltrans District 4 Public Affairs.
“Although no full highway closures are scheduled at this time, motorists may experience delays as crews work on I-780 with intermittent, overnight, alternating ramp and lane closures,” Jacala said.
The crack repair and surface preparation should be complete by Saturday, he said. The next phase of the job will take place Monday through Friday nights, depending on weather.
The entire project is expected to be finished by November, Jacala said.
To make the work safer for both workers and motorists, one of the two traffic lanes on eastbound I-780 and one of the two traffic lanes on westbound I-780 will be closed from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Mondays through Fridays.
“Motorists should drive with caution through the work zone,” Jacala said.
