The city council hosted a reception Tuesday to allow the public an opportunity to meet and greet incoming and outgoing elected officials. The regularly scheduled city council meeting, held in two parts, immediately followed the reception.
The 7 p.m. meeting began with a dedication by Mayor Elizabeth Patterson to the victims of the recent fire in Oakland, which included 1999 Benicia High School graduate Travis Hough. Benicia Fire Chief Jim Lydon then announced some upcoming fire department-related events, including a free disaster preparedness class to be offered in January.
The council’s Dec. 6 consent calendar was approved without exception and included the approval of a parcel map for the subdivision of an 8.1-acre parcel into two parcels located at 4701 Park Road.; approval of the first-quarter, fiscal year 2016-2017 investment report and policy; adoption of two resolutions authorizing contracts for roof replacement for the apparatus bay at Fire Station 11 (Metal Building Co., $56,135) and the corporation yard’s main building (Quality Erectors & Construction Inc., $94,200), respectively.
City Clerk Lisa Wolfe reported the final results of the general municipal election held on Nov. 8. The results were certified by the Registrar of Voters on Dec. 5 and include the following statistics, as read by Wolfe: 19,063 Benicia residents were registered to vote in the election; 15,705 votes were cast, which represents an 83 percent turnout;
Mayor Patterson received 7,548 votes and contender and former vice mayor Mark Hughes received 7, 216 votes; Planning Commissioner Steve Young received 6,720 votes; and re-elected councilmember Tom Campbell received 6,428 votes. (These totals were not included in the council’s written agenda for the Dec. 6 meeting.) As the top vote-getter, Young will serve as the city’s new vice mayor.
A report on Part Two of the Dec. 6 city council meeting, which convened at 7:30, will appear in tomorrow’s Herald.
Complete copies of the agendas for both parts of the city council meeting, along with video transcripts, are available at the city of Benicia website at ci.benicia.ca.us. A written transcript, or minutes, of any city council or planning commission meeting is generally available at the same site approximately two weeks after the meeting date.
