Spare the Air Alert issued for today
If you are looking to spend your Labor Day weekend hiking in Solano County, you might want to consider where to go. With temperatures looking to rise into the triple digits in many parts of the Bay Area, a high fire danger warning has resulted in the temporary closure of certain parks.
According to Solano Land Trust, a previously scheduled Nature Hike at King-Swett Ranches, located on the southwestern corner of Solano County, on Sept. 2 was canceled as was a Labor Day Hike at Rockville Trails Preserve in Fairfield’s rural Suisun Valley region.
At least one hiking area is scheduled to be closed for longer. Lynch Canyon Open Space, located between Vallejo and Fairfield, will be closed starting today due to a high fire risk. It is expected to reopen Friday, Sept. 8.
With temperatures expected to be in the upper 90s and lower 100s, staying indoors is the safest option. The Benicia Public Library has been designated as the city’s cooling station during the heatwave.
Additionally, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) has issued a Spare the Air Alert for today. Residents are encouraged to carpool or bike to work.
“The Labor Day heatwave is expected to bring unhealthy air quality throughout much of the inland areas of the Bay Area,” BAAQMD Executive Officer Jack Broadbent said in a statement. “Extreme temperatures, like those we are expecting this weekend, require caution. To protect your health, avoid exercising or outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and follow the advice of local health officials to find cooling centers in your area.”
