Benicia High senior Lily Hayward finally got her Solano County Athletic Conference singles tennis championship.
Hayward, who lost in the SCAC singles finals in 2014 and 2015, beat Benicia teammate Melanie Fisher 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 last Wednesday to take home the 2016 title. The win capped off an undefeated season for Hayward, who was named the SCAC’s Most Valuable Player.
“This seesaw battle was one of Lily taking an early command, using deep forcing shoots to both corners of the court,” said Benicia tennis coach Lisa Burton. “Then a momentum change and renewed focus the second set was Melanie Fisher’s. Lily then regained control, making more passing shots in the third set to take the title.”
It was the first loss of the season for Fisher, who joined unbeaten teammates Hayward, Madeline Beyer and Emily Jewik on the All-SCAC team. Honorable Mentions went to Madison Lammert and Kaitlyn Tang, who also went unbeaten this season.
Lammert and Benicia teammate Madeline Beyer won the SCAC doubles championship with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over top-seeded Tatiana Orellana and Katie McDaniel of Vanden.
Benicia, which went undefeated as a team during the regular season, gets a first-round bye in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs and will host a quarterfinal match on Tuesday against the winner between Bella Vista of the Capital Valley Conference and Rio Americano of the Capital Athletic League.
