California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson has released an updated publication available online to help teachers instruct students in compliance with the state’s new standards on reading, writing and comprehension.
The English Language Arts/English Language Development Framework for California Public Schools, or ELA/ELD Framework, was adopted by the State Board of Education in 2014.
The ELA/ELD Framework was the first new guidance tool for teaching English language arts under the Common Core State Standards, and has additional support for English learners, according to information from the State Board of Education.
It was the first publication in the nation to provide dual guidelines for English language arts and content literacy at the same time, as well as address English language development for English learners, according to a statement released by Torlakson’s department.
In a news release Torlakson explained that The ELA/ELD Framework guides educators in teaching the Common Core standards and defines what students should know and do in each grade.
It also follows California’s new rigorous state academic standards, which promote literacy through critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and communication, Torlakson said.
“California is leading the nation by developing an integrated ELA/ELD Framework and making it widely available,” he said. “This will help improve literacy instruction, a critical element of preparing California students for college and careers in the 21st century.”
The new language framework has color and graphics, highlighted text, layout improvements and links to other relevant pages, he said.
In addition, the publication provides teachers with strategies and sample lessons designed to strengthen learning and improve English language development instruction while addressing various needs of individual students.
It also provides teachers with guidance on working in other subjects, informs them about professional development, offers technology for instruction and learning and criteria for evaluating instructional materials, and gives teachers assessment strategies to improve instruction and learning.
