No word on condition after car hit while on shoulder at I-680/780
A 6-year-old girl who was injured Tuesday night when a motorist plowed into her parents’ disabled vehicle was airlifted to Oakland after she suffered “major facial trauma” and lost consciousness, California Highway Patrol Officer Christopher Parker said Wednesday.
The girl was taken to Children’s Hospital and Research Center, Oakland. Her mother was taken by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek, after suffering cuts and bruises and losing consciousness, Parker said.
The accident occurred about 8 p.m. on the shoulder of the transition lane between South Interstate 680 and West I-780.
No information was available at press time Wednesday on the condition of either the child or her mother, Parker said.
He said the child’s father had driven his 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle onto the right shoulder after it had mechanical difficulties and was out of the vehicle at the time of the accident.
His wife was in the front passenger seat, but her restraints were not fastened, Parker said.
The girl was on the vehicle’s right side. The family members’ names were not released.
A 33-year-old Benicia man, identified as Joshua Levine, was driving a 2007 Subaru Forester in the transition lane at about 50 mph when he reached to adjust the vehicle’s radio, Parker said.
The vehicle drifted onto the shoulder and slammed into the Chevelle at 50 mph, he said. Levine appeared not to have applied his brakes, Parker said, and the Chevelle suffered major damage.
Traffic was blocked so a CALSTAR helicopter could land to carry the girl to Oakland, Parker said.
Neither of the drivers was injured, he said.
The accident remains under investigation, and any complaints are pending, Parker said; however, alcohol is not suspected of being a factor in the crash.
