Is Benicia’s historic Capitol haunted?
That’s one of the questions that may get answered when celebrity ghost hunters conduct a late-night investigation of the building Saturday during Bay Area ParaCon, the annual conference on paranormal activity.
The Benicia event will bring together paranormal investigators, some of whom are featured on television programs, as well as intuitives, authors and fans, said Sheila Thomas, publicist with Patricia Schneider and Associates of Larkspur.
“I have had an interest in clairvoyance ever since I was very young, and Benicia is the perfect location for Northern California’s paranormal conference,” said Carol Reed, a longtime Benicia resident who is producing the conference.
“Along with a rich and vibrant past, Benicia has a unique history and paranormal evidence, making it an exceptional city to explore including ghost sightings at the Capitol,” Reed said.
The Capitol is of particular interest, she said, because throughout the years many “unexplained occurrences, strange incidences and other unusual phenomena have been reported. I look forward to exploring this first hand with our paranormal investigators.”
They will gather at 10 p.m. Saturday for the ghost investigation of the Capitol at the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park, 115 West G St. A portion of ticket sales will benefit the Benicia State Parks Association (BSPA).
“We have a very interesting old photograph from the 19th century and reports of an apparition dressed in period clothing that visits the Capitol regularly,” said Dan Smith, BSPA volunteer coordinator. “This sighting contributes to the ongoing debate about whether the Capitol is haunted. We are excited to have experts on paranormal activity visit our town and see what they think.”
Among the celebrities appearing throughout the day will be Josh Gates, host of “Expedition Unknown” and “Destination Truth;” Ben Hansen of “Fact or Faked”; Brian Cano of “Haunted Collector”; and Dr. Jeff Dwyer, author and ghost investigator.
Host of the conference is Karen Rontowski, a television comic who also has a career as a Tarot card reader, Reiki master and paranormal investigator.
“Karen loves the supernatural, and believes she will someday have a near death experience, because she never finishes anything,” publicist Thomas said.
Rontowski also has been the host of other ParaCons and paranormal events, including those in Las Vegas and Virginia City, Nev.; Gettysburg, Pa.; and Santa Clarita. She also has been a lead investigator and paranormal consultant for “Four Square,” an independent film, after its crew heard unexpected voices on the movie’s audio track.
“Bay Area ParaCon is the largest paranormal conference in Northern California, and will offer unparalleled opportunities to listen, ask questions and mingle with the foremost investigators, practitioners and scholars in the fields of paranormal, mysticism, astrology and more,” Thomas said.
Clairvoyant Cassidy Rae, of “Dead People See Me”; Stephen Quong, Vedic astrologer; Eve Lorgen, author of “The Love Bite,” researcher of anomalous trauma and consultant; and Cinthia Varkevisser, mystic, intuitive and graphologist, also will be at the conference, she said.
The Saturday daytime program starts at 9:25 a.m. with a welcome by Rontowski and Reed. Varkevisser, Cano, Dwyer, Hansen and Lorgen will speak throughout the day, after which a panel will answer questions.
Also available at the conference will be psychic gallery readings, book signings, a ghost tour and vendor tables.
“Whether you’ve been active in the field of the paranormal for decades or are new to the arena, we feel confident that more is out there,” Reed said. “We are delighted to offer this great lineup of experts to our local community. It’ll prove to be an exciting, information-filled paranormal event!”
Prior to the conference, the public may attend a “Para-Mingle” and wine reception at Benicia Yacht Club, 400 East Second St., at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Beverages and light hors d’oeuvres will be served. Tickets are $50.
Registration for the conference starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Benicia Veterans Memorial Building, 1150 First St. Tickets to the conference’s day schedule are $100 each.
The ghost investigation at the Benicia Capitol will start at 10 p.m. Saturday. Participation is limited to ticket holders, and cost to attend is $60.
A $200 inclusive ticket provides admission to all ParaCon events.

Some folks just like to talk about themselves and make no sense.

There is only one real ghost in town. A ghost of a man that once was. Or, was he?
