Adult Drug Court programs in Fairfield and Vallejo will celebrate those completing the programs with a graduation ceremony June 15, Solano County Superior Court Executive Officer Brian K. Taylor said.
“Drug Courts are a critical component of criminal justice reform, designed to address the underlying causes of criminal behavior by focusing on treatment rather than punishment,” Taylor said.
During their participation, those who are enrolled in Adult Drug Court programs may be required to have treatment, submit to a drug test, attend a recovery support meeting such as Alcoholics Anonymous and meet with a case manager.
At the same time, the participants must meet other obligations, such as working or being a parent, Taylor said.
“Participation in Drug Court is not the easier path, but it promises to be life changing,” he said.
“As one of our potential graduates has stated, ‘My worst day sober is still better than my best day high.’”
Judge Wendy G. Getty added, “This Drug Court graduation represents achievement of sobriety and stability for the graduates, and our community’s opportunity to break the generational cycle of substance abuse, violence and criminality.”
She said graduation means better opportunities not only for the graduates but also their families and children.
“We are especially proud of this graduation,” Getty said.
“At a time when other county’s drug courts are struggling due to lack of participation following Proposition 47, through the proactive collaboration of our Solano County Drug Court justice participants, not only have we increased participation but we will have our largest graduating class to date.
“The court is grateful for the collaboration and contribution of our criminal justice partners.”
Getty and Judge Tim P. Kam will preside at the graduation, and the public is welcome.
The graduation will take place at 3 p.m. June 15 in the Law and Justice Center, 600 Union Ave., Fairfield.
